What's Wispar?

A free, open-source, self-hostable, digital book management solution; Wispar aims to replicate features of restrictive commercial eBook and Audiobook management suites, like those offered by Amazon, Google, Apple etc. The core innovative feature of Wispar is a synced audio-to-text reading experience similar to the one provided by Audible/Kindle Whispersync, without being limited to books purchased from Amazon, devices supported by Amazon, or requiring their monthly subscription The simple and intuitive web interface is accesible in most modern browsers and combines playback progress across audio/ebooks into a single Library item. It also provides some automatic metadata correction or augmentation from online APIs, as well as an interface for users to manually manage book metadata.

Gabriel Hoopes

Gabriel is a senior, about to graduate with a Bachelor's in Computer Science, with a minor in Korean and Korean Studies, at the University of Utah. During his time at the U, he learned that he likes to work on backend development, which led to him working primarily on the backend and databases for Wispar. When not working, he enjoys hiking, listening to audiobooks, and spending time with friends. During his years at school, he spent a considerable amount of time working on a matchmaking service called MatchmakerU, as well as working as a backend engineer for IrisAI, an AI powered personal assistant. In 2024, he had the opportunity to work a summer internship at a Utah based company, BambooHR, and is excited to work there full time as a Software Engineer upon graduation.

Jedidiah Schmith

Graduates from the University of Utah in 2025 with a Bachelor's in Computer Science, a minor in Physics, and a minor in Mathematics. Jedidiah's focus during his studies at the Univeristy of Utah has been on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. His experience with Machine Learning led him to focus on the audio recognition model used by Wispar and the various components of the Wispar project that interfaced with the model. When not working, he spends his time pursuing creative story world building and brainstorming ideas on how to improve existing technologies. He has a passion for problem solving, debate, and philosphy. Following graduation, he plans to work in industry for a few years to shore up blindspots in his technological skillset before pursuing a PhD in Artificial Intelligence. He has a lifelong ambition to develop Artifical Superintelligence and believes he can attain this through the development of enhancing automated researching tools.

Noah Schmitz

Graduating from the University of Utah in 2025 with a Computer Science and a Latin American Studies degree. Noah has taken diverse courses while studying Computer Science, some courses focused on fundamentals like Computer Architecture, and Models of Computation as well as courses focusing on the intersection of Computer science with other areas such as Ethics in Data Science, or Human Centered Design. Noah was responsible for the majority of the front end of Wispar, as well as some integrations throughout the full stack. Noah's contributions focused specifically on the reading and listening experience, implementing features such as the reader and player, with support for our synced medium feature. Outside of work and school, Noah can be found playing VR games, reading, or spending time with friends in the great outdoors.

Zach Wilson

Zach is a senior, graduating with his Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the University of Utah. While pursuing his undergrad, Zach has taken courses in numerous areas, such as Networking, Security, Databases, and the Software Development Process. For Wispar, he worked primarily on the deployment process and containerization. Outside of work and school, he enjoys time walking his dog, watching soccer, and spending time with friends and family. Zach has been a Research Intern for Georgia Tech Research Institute over the past year, working to develop and test software applications for the LMOC training platform. Following graduation, Zach will be moving to Seattle with his fiancé while she pursues her Masters in Architecture from the University of Washington.
